Lidl GB recruits for store, warehouse and head office roles across the UK, including part-time and full-time positions and some entry-level roles. This guide explains how the application process usually works and sets out common interview questions with example answers.
The Lidl hiring process
The stages vary by role, but for positions such as store assistant, customer service or warehouse operative, applicants can generally expect the following:
- An online application through the Lidl careers website.
- For some roles, a situational test or a video interview.
- An interview in person or online, depending on the position.
- In some cases, a trial shift for store or warehouse roles.
Some entry-level roles are open to applicants without previous retail experience. In those cases, a good work ethic and a willingness to learn carry particular weight.
Common Lidl interview questions
The example answers below are written from the candidate’s point of view. They are intended as a starting point and should be adapted to your own experience.
1. Why do you want to work at Lidl?
Example answer:
“I am looking for a part-time role where I can build experience and progress. Lidl appeals to me because new starters are trained on the job, and the team environment seems supportive. I would like to stay for the long term and, in time, move into a full-time role.”
2. Describe a time you gave excellent customer service
Example answer:
“In a previous customer service role, I helped a customer who could not find several items. I took them to each one and checked afterwards that they had everything they needed. I believe that kind of care and teamwork is essential in a retail job.”
3. Can you handle working in a fast-paced environment with multiple tasks?
Example answer:
“Yes. I have worked in busy roles before and can move between stocking shelves, serving customers and keeping the area organised. I understand that Lidl stores are busy, and I am comfortable prioritising tasks while still helping shoppers.”
4. Would you help in other departments outside your role if asked?
Example answer:
“Certainly. I like roles where I can learn different tasks. Even if I were hired as a store assistant, I would be happy to help in the stockroom, on the tills or wherever I was needed.”
5. What makes you a good candidate for this job?
Example answer:
“I am reliable and keen to work, and I am open to either full-time or part-time hours. I learn quickly and stay calm under pressure, which I believe suits an entry-level position at Lidl.”
Interview tips
- Be clear about the type of role you are applying for, whether in a store, a warehouse or an office.
- If you have no previous experience, say so plainly and show that you are willing to learn.
- State whether you are looking for weekend work, evening shifts or hours that fit around your studies.
- Be clear about your availability and how flexible you can be, as shift patterns matter in retail.
