Tesco is one of the largest employers in the UK, with store, distribution and office roles across the country. This guide sets out how the application process usually works and the questions candidates are commonly asked at interview, with example answers that can be adapted to your own experience.
Many store roles at Tesco are entry-level and are open to applicants with part-time, full-time or temporary availability.
How the Tesco hiring process works
The process varies by role, but applicants can generally expect the following stages:
- Apply online through Tesco Careers.
- Complete an online situational judgement test, if the role requires one.
- Attend a video or in-person interview if shortlisted.
- In some cases, complete a trial shift to show how you handle the work in practice.
Some roles, such as customer assistant, are open to applicants without previous experience. The details of training are set out in each vacancy.
Common Tesco interview questions
The questions below are typical of interviews for store and entry-level roles. The example answers are written from the candidate’s point of view and should be adapted to reflect your own experience.
1. Why do you want to work at Tesco?
Example answer:
“I am looking for a part-time role in a team-based environment. Tesco has a reputation for looking after both its customers and its staff, and I would like to contribute to that while gaining experience in retail.”
2. Describe a time you went the extra mile for a customer
Example answer:
“In my last retail job, a customer was having difficulty finding products suitable for an allergy. I helped them check the ingredients and suggested some alternatives. They were very grateful, and it showed me how much good customer service matters.”
3. What would you do if you were busy stacking shelves and a customer needed help?
Example answer:
“I would pause what I was doing and help the customer first. In a store role, customers come first. Once they had what they needed, I would return to my original task.”
4. Are you open to working weekends, evenings or bank holidays?
Example answer:
“Yes. I understand that stores open in the evenings, at weekends and on bank holidays, and I am able to work those shifts.”
Answer this question honestly. If your availability is limited, state clearly which shifts you can work.
5. Why should we hire you over other candidates?
Example answer:
“I may not have many years of experience, but I am reliable, I learn quickly and I enjoy helping people. I would bring a positive attitude to the team, which I believe is important in an entry-level retail role.”
6. How do you deal with stressful or fast-paced environments?
Example answer:
“I stay calm and deal with one task at a time. I have worked during busy holiday periods and learned to stay organised while still helping customers. I know stores can become very busy, and I am confident I can manage that.”
Interview tips
- State clearly whether you are looking for part-time, full-time or temporary work.
- Mention whether you can work night shifts, early mornings or around your studies.
- Give specific examples of working in a team, dealing with customers and working under pressure.
- Highlight practical skills such as communication, time management and flexibility.
